Not unless your a self loathing masachist. Compiling your programs and then they dont even work, have buggs related directly to the newest release or that the program that you are trying to run uses libraries that are outdated. You end up never finding a fix for it. Or justifying using an OS for god sake(its only a means to an end unless your just a cheap bastard and cant pay for msoft or the fascist alternative MAC)I mean who cares if I run MAME on my Windows or my Ubuntu partition? I program for a living and I can tell you right now, the constant irritating state of affairs surrounding the Linux desktop world is enough to make me puke. I want to beleive that it can work, really I do! I realize that Ubuntu and Linux continues to make major strides and I support that 110% at the end of the day I wanna be able to run my TF2, HL2, Resident Evil 5, Streetfighter 4 and steam games at the same quality as windows. I know it can be done if the developers encocde the game engine to use OPENGL but last I heard OPENGL is losing credable ground in the gaming industry, cause they havent delivered in a while on the next release. I hope that they can turn it around. Anyways thats why Linux is best for servers and isnt quite there yet on the desktop...

windows vista is better than xp cuz xp 2 slow and my vista wont turn on so now im using my stupid xp now i wanna get a mac or may try out linux cuz my xp is slow and my vista wont turn on so i took a 4 hour nap and now im awake

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
